Former Tranmere player Jason McAteer has thrown his hat into the ring to manage his hometown club.

The former Republic of Ireland international finished his career at Rovers, playing at Prenton Park from 2004 to 2007.

He would now like to manage the League One outfit following the sacking of Ronnie Moore last week after three years in charge.

McAteer said: "I've made the club aware of my interest in the job and am waiting for them to get back to me."

But the Birkenhead-born 37-year-old could face competition from the likes of John Barnes, Paul Ince and Steve Coppell for the job.
