Onyewu: Late interest

Fulham are looking to hijack Birmingham's bid for American ace Oguchi Onyewu, skysports.com understands.

The US defender has been locked in talks with the newly-promoted Blues - who are looking to bolster their squad with a series of new names.

The 27-year-old defender is available on a Bosman transfer from Standard Liege after he opted to quit the Belgian club instead of renewing his contract.

Onyewu has previous experience of playing in England with Newcastle and he is now ready to try his luck in the Premier League again.

Birmingham looked to have won the race for Onyewu ahead of fellow Premier League new boys Wolves.

However, Fulham are now thought to be showing interest and are ready to make a move to try and convince Onyewu to switch to West London.

But Birmingham will be desperate to hold off Fulham and secure Onyewu's signature in the coming days as they look to bolster their squad for the new season.
