Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson hopes to pip his father Sir Alex to the signing of Stockport County defender Josh Thompson.

Ferguson jnr has confirmed Peterborough have made a bid for Thompson, who trained with Manchester United and West Brom at the end of last season.

Both United and the Baggies remain keen to sign the 18-year-old, but Ferguson feels Posh are in pole position to capture the centre-half.

"He's one of the top young defenders in the country right now, along with Ryan Bennett at Grimsby," Ferguson told the Evening Telegraph.

"We've made an offer and I believe we have a good chance of getting him. He was on trial at United last season and at West Brom, and I know both clubs were impressed.

"But as far as I know we are the only ones to have made a bid so far. Josh is our sort of player. He's very talented and yet capable of great improvement."

Thompson has made nine appearances for the Hatters since making his debut in January and could be the latest player to leave the financially crippled League One club.
