Southampton have confirmed that manager Mark Wotte has left the club after six months at the helm.

The Dutchman came to the club last summer following the departure of Nigel Pearson, initially working under Jan Poortvliet.

He was then made boss in January but Saints endured a difficult period both on and off the pitch as they suffered relegation from the Championship and struggled financially.

Southampton's future was secured earlier this week as Markus Liebherr completed his takeover at St Mary's.

The decision has now been taken for Wotte to step down, with Southampton announcing on their official website that the move is part of a 'wider strategic plan'.

The search for a new manager has already begun, with Stewart Henderson taking charge of first team affairs on a temporary basis.

Southampton kick off their League One campaign with a home game against Millwall on 8th August.
