Da Silva: Has Bruce's backing
I've seen him play on a couple of occasions and I can tell you he's a very, very good player whose credentials are there for all to see.
Bruce on da Silva
Quotes of the week
Steve Bruce believes Sunderland's newest signing Paulo da Silva is a 'very, very good' player.
The Black Cats snapped up the Paraguay captain, who is a virtual unknown among Premier League fans, on a three-year deal on Monday.
However, Bruce has an excellent track record when it comes to scouting South America having brought the likes of Wilson Palacios and Antonio Valencia to England.
Bruce insists he has another gem in da Silva and is backing the 29-year-old to become a success when he settles in his new surroundings.
"Paulo comes with a great pedigree as captain of his club and country," he told the club's official website.
"I've seen him play on a couple of occasions and I can tell you he's a very, very good player whose credentials are there for all to see.
"The lads coming from South America almost always need time to adapt and settle in but Paulo's overall pedigree is undoubted."
Bruce is adamant Da Silva will not be the last new recruit before the season kicks off.
"We're busy working away behind the scenes making sure we're ready to get in who we want to get in," Bruce concluded.
