Burnley rounded off their pre-season trip to America with a penalty shoot-out win over Portland Timbers following a 2-2 draw.

Brian Jensen saved twice in the shoot-out for the Clarets, whose goals in normal time had been scored by Steven Caldwell and Steven Thompson.

Portland provided the Premier League new boys with a stiff test and took the lead on 13 minutes when George Joston fired past Jensen after getting in behind Clarke Carlisle.

Jensen kept Burnley in the game in the first period before getting back on level terms five minutes before the break when Caldwell headed home Robbie Blake's deep free-kick.

Burnley keeper Jensen then made a superb double save before half-time, with the Clarets improving in the second period as record signing Steven Fletcher went close.

On 66 minutes, Burnley took the lead as substitute Thompson finished off a flowing move involving Kevin McDonald and new signing Richard Eckersley.

Portland grabbed a stunning equaliser eight minutes from time when Rodrigo Lopez curled a free-kick into the top corner following a foul by Michael Duff.

The home side had Cameron Knowles sent off late on and, in the shoot-out, Wade Elliott stroked home the winning spot-kick after Jensen had saved from Kevin Forrest and Alex Nimo.
