Shorey: Set for Portsmouth
Sky Sports sources understand Portsmouth are close to signing Aston Villa full-back Nicky Shorey on a season-long loan deal.
Shorey has started all five of Villa's games this season, but the recent arrival of Stephen Warnock has raised more uncertainty over his future with Martin O'Neill's side.
The England international joined Villa last summer from Reading, but found himself in and out of O'Neill's side last term.
He was regularly replaced at left-back by Luke Young and recently admitted he was unsure if he would still be at Villa Park by the close of the transfer window.
And though the 28-year-old was prepared to fight for his place following the capture of Warnock, he now looks set for a move to Portsmouth.
Villa have accepted a loan offer from Pompey and Shorey is travelling to Fratton Park to undergo a medical.
Pompey are expected to be among the busiest clubs in the transfer market on the final day of the window and have also agreed a deal with Benfica to sign Hassan Yebda on loan.

On the other hand (and I realise that this is a fairly optimistic angle!) it might mean that Freddie's on the mend... Not much point in having 3 left backs in the squad, regardless of its size.

I agree with Simon, ok Shorey isn't the best.. But with Freddie still not fit surely he would provide adequate cover for Warnock?

Could not agree more, shorey has been one of our best players in the last three games and is just starting to show us what he can do!! I agree that he was below par last season, but he has started this season so well.... cannot understand oneils thinking, whos to say that warnock will settle in straight away?? And what if he gets injured!! Bad move by oneil, his tactics seem way off and despite a couple of good wins, i am losing faith that he is the man to take our club to the next level..... unless something else is going on at the club that none of us know about!!

I feel Sorry for the lad, he had a great game at Fulham and the back 4 looked solid even without Davies. So Mr O'Neill what happened to growing the club surely Randy has the money to spend ..... Back to the usual days of 1 in and 1 out!! As ever disappointed...

why is the club with the smallest squad in the premier league still let players leave when cover is thin martin o'neil is either stupid or the club chairman has no money. nicky shorey has come on leaps and bound since being given a run why let him go.
