Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor has been hit with a double charge by the Football Association in the wake of last weekend's win over former club Arsenal.

Adebayor has been charged with violent conduct for his challenge on Robin van Persie and he has been charged with improper conduct for his goal celebration at Eastlands.

The £25m summer signing from Arsenal escaped punishment from referee Mark Clattenburg after appearing to stamp on Van Persie after a tackle between the pair.

Van Persie accused his former team-mate of deliberately setting out to hurt him when he caught him in the face with his boot.

Adebayor then almost sparked a riot in the away fans end after running the length of the field to celebrate his goal in the 4-2 victory in front of the Arsenal supporters.

The Togo international apologised for his over-zealous celebration, but expressed his innocence over the clash with Van Persie.

If Adebayor is found guilty of violent conduct he will be handed a three-match ban that would result in him missing Sunday's derby against Manchester United and that suspension could be increased if he is also found guilty of improper conduct.

Adebayor has until 6pm on Wednesday to respond to the charge, but it looks almost certain he will be handed a three-match ban with the charge of improper conduct to be heard at a later date.

"The Football Association today issued two charges against Manchester City's Emmanuel Adebayor following Saturday's Premier League fixture between Manchester City and Arsenal," said a statement issued by the FA.

"Under the fast-track disciplinary process, Adebayor has been charged with violent conduct following an incident with Robin van Persie, which resulted in the Arsenal player receiving facial injuries.

"Referee Mark Clattenburg has advised the FA that he did not see this incident, but has confirmed that had he done so, he would have sent Adebayor off for violent conduct. The player has until 6pm on Wednesday evening to respond to the charge.

"Adebayor has also been charged with improper conduct following his actions when turning and running the full length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the Arsenal supporters after scoring.

"The Greater Manchester Police have written to The FA with their views on this incident. A separate date will now be arranged for a commission to consider Adebayor's goal celebration."

Andy O'rourke says...

Adebayor is an idiot, his actions on Saturday are fully deserving of the 2 FA charges brought against him. Setting out to deliberately injure a player isn't welcome in football. What Adebayor did is closer to assault than 'Violent conduct' and shows what a petulant and cowardly player he is. This was then consolidated by him sprinting the length of the pitch to celebrate in front of Arsenal fans. He didn't display that much enthusiasm wearing an Arsenal shirt, where if it wasn't for Arsenal and Wenger, he wouldn't be getting his fat pay cheque now at city. Adebayor is everything that fans worldwide resent in a footballer; disloyal, disrespectful, greedy and above all overpaid.

Ryan Schiller (Liverpool fan) says...

Is it now illegal for a player to celebrate in front of away fans? Is it okay if he smiles at them after scoring a goal? The arsenal supporters were always out for Ade's blood and it's ludicrous to blame him for the inability of the Arsenal fans to control themselves. I think that if the fans have a right to shout verbal abuse at a player all game long, the player should be able to counter their abuse by scoring and celebrating in front of them. The RVP thing is a totally different issue which he needs a ban for.

Rudwaan Smith (Manchester United fan) says...

Even before the game started he knew that the focus would be on him. The stamp on RVP was clearly intentional judging from the direction of his eyes unless Van Persie's head suddenly looks like a football. Many players in the past have made gestues to opposition fans either after a win or scoring a goal and they got away with it, Gary Neville comes to mind. It was immature from him and judging from the crowds reaction luckily it didnt spill out onto the streets after the game. If this was done in Argentinia or Turkey it would have been chaos. He took the focus of a great Man City performance, ban him for 3 games.

I am not a big fan of the daft one however, he played a blinder against arsenal and by all accounts he was getting lumps kicked out of him by his former team mates. This is where the frustration came from and this is why he lashed out at Van Persie. The referee clearly needed to take a view of the game leading up to that first incident by taking the Arsenal players to task. This did not happen therefore in this instance: misconduct with mitigating circumstances therefore let him get his head down and take his punishment. On the goal celebration: you won't get much loyalty when you make it known to your own supporters that you would gladly switch allegiance to a 'bigger' club so don't cry any tears when they start to see you as a mercenary. He was always going to get abused by Arsenal fans and he was daft for overstepping the mark after having responded by scoring in the first place. Verdict: inexcusable behaviour resulting in a misconduct charge. He has shown himself up to be as daft as a brush and will have to shamefully absorb the fallout from acting like a child when he should have been more grown up. With all that said, he is an exceptional player and if Ronaldo was sold for £80 million then Ade was undervalued as he is worth 20 goals a season, as he proved at Arsenal.

The F.A need to throw the book at him, adebayor was a disgrace! The stamp on Van Persie was just plain malicious and his injuries could of been a lot worse. As for running the legnth of the pitch to celebrate in front of the Arsenal fans, that was just childish and I am still in disbelief that many City fans feel he's done nothing wrong! When you're being paid as much as some of these footballers are, you should be able to take a bit of stick from opposing fans. A 6 game ban at the very least!

"You ask 100 people, 99 will say it's very bad and the hundredth will be Mark Hughes."... Exceptional comment by Wenger.. :)

The name Emmanuel Adebayor, and the phrase "exceptional ability" do not, unfortunately, go together in the same sentence. An absolute waste of a huge amount of money that could have been better spent elsewhere. And now he's not even available for one of City's biggest games of the season. I fail to understand a transfer market where Adebayor goes for £25m, Jolean Lescott goes for £25m and Wesley Sneider (who's worth double the amount of those two put together) sneaks out of Real Madrid for £14m!!!!

John Jackson says...

Ok. Lets analyse this case. It is arguable that the Arsenal players also went hard on Adebayor. It is indisputable that Adebayor even when an player was emotional tortured by the furstrated fans. Now, this begs the question whether was Adebayor blinded to how A. Cole was treated, and didn't he see how a professional responds to abuse. Play well, score goal and celebrate with your team and kiss the badge, that is as best a response any hurt player could give. (e.g. Wayne Rooney v Everton). Adebayor's attitude was not just bad, but was also risky, as it could not only incite violence from the fans on him, but also between both fans (e.g. Westham v Millwall). Subsequently, this is not Ade's first season in the PL, so he must have heard about Frank Lampard v Westham, Campbell v Spurs, Rooney V Everton, Cole v Arsenal. Infact, by this, I expect the Arsenal fans would definitely fall back in love with Ashley Cole. Ade's conduct begs a punitive measure proportiional to the consequences of his act. And if Mark Hughes did say he saw nothing wrong with the player's conduct, please forgive me for saying he needs to be ashamed of himself.

Wills The beast (Manchester City fan) says...

It seems a bit of an over reaction Adebayor is not the first player to celebrate in front of the opposing team's fans let alone his old fans and as for intentionally injuring people has that utd fan ever heard of roy keane, paul ince, paul mcgrath and even paul scholes some of his challenges could do more damage. The FA is not making a good name for itself these days with its inconsistent views on every aspect of the game if they are not carefull it will end up like the italian league where the tv pull out funding because its all boring.

Dave Hartford (man city fan) says...

Apologies for the blinkered view from fello Man City fans. The TV replays CLEARLY show that Ade did flick his boot at Van Persie. The Van Persie tackle was atrocious and the referee should have penalised him for it but there is no excuse for the intentional flick out by Ade in retaliation. The pitch length run by Ade was immature, embarrasing and shows a very risky attitude which is likely to get him in more trouble as the season progresses. He deserves the punishment and should be disciplined by the club as well.

As a man city fan who goes to every home game i am very dissapointed in Adebayor. His actions on saturday were Disgracful! And i am sick of all these blinkered man city fans saying he didnt mean to stamp on van persie. He clearly did!! If the same thing happened to you, would you be saying oh it was accidental? i dont think so. Wake up!!

Chris The blue (Manchester City fan) says...

To Dave Shannon (Man Utd Fan) 'a ban of 10 games for a player that tries to deliberately injure another player', how interesting. You support a team who had Roy Keane as a member of your ranks for many years.....if this rule had been about Roy would never have set foot on a football pitch (waist high tackle on Alfie Haaland ring any bells ?). Get some perspective. Hes apologised, how can everyone be so sure it was deliberate?

Selwyn Govender (Tottenham Hotspur fan) says...

Van Persie tried to break Ade's legs in the tackle and missed. Ade in turn, gave it to him on his face. Both players are guilty of misconduct and both should have been punished. If Van Persie connected in the tackle and broke Ade's leg, what will the Arsenal fans then say? Well done or Ade deserved it????????

James Smith says...

The Goal celebration was stupid however, with the amount of abuse Adebayor got for the fans abusing him I for one can understand his actions. I think even himself knows he was wrong to run the length of the pitch and he has said sorry. I don't think he should get banned but just fined by both City and the FA and a warning for his future conduct for the celebration. However, the stamp aimed at Van Persie was unforgivable. If someone off the pitch had done that in the street he would have been arrested regardless, if it has aimed at his hand or not (Tony Higgs). He is lucky that Van Persie has not decided to press charges, Adebayor can count himself lucky that he is not on GBH/ABH charge. The book needs to be thrown at him for this one. Mark Hughes and Kolo Toure are both wrong for supporting him. I agree that the game is tough and men play the game. However, no-one deserves to be assaulted in such a fashion.

Paul Williams (Manchester United fan) says...

The man should face the facts and so should his team mates, he stamped on another player, he deserves what he gets. If that had been an incident outside a night club and caught on camera he would be of been arrested and in my eyes charged. I dont like to see that sort action, especially in football. How long will it be until the kids of the sport are doing the same thing just because they saw a professional footballer do it.

Tom Jennings (Arsenal fan) says...

Can we please stop being so partisan about this? Arsenal fans were embarrassing in their reaction to the celebration, which to me was idiotic and obviously preconceived, but of minimal importance compared to his stamps, not just on Van Persie but also on Fabregas. Van Persie's foul that preceded the stamp was also poor, but City fans, who I have nothing against and am glad they can enjoy some long-overdue success, please don't lose your perspective; Adebayor's actions were disgusting and Arsenal fans' dislike of him is well deserved. It's not for nothing that he has created enemies everywhere he has gone. Gareth Stewart - Please don't bring up Eduardo's dive - it's completely irrelevant and you'll see far worse from Ade. Tony Higgs - I love the "he meant to stamp on his hand" excuse." Wonder if he'll use that in his disciplinary hearing.

Philip Devonald (Manchester City fan) says...

I was convinced the signing of Adebayor was our best move of the summer, however despite his exceptional ability it will take alot to earn back my respect for him as a player. This is a huge loss concidering the weekend fixture but no City fan should expect him to be on the pitch!! Deserves what he gets!!

Craig Newton (Chelsea fan) says...

How can any Man City fan defend Adebayor and his actions!? 1.Its evident he intentionally lashed out at Van Persie, you can plainly see his foot flick out towards his face and he's looking down at him as well! 2.As for the crowd incident, the man ran THE LENGTH OF THE PITCH! This is no spur of the moment thing,he had a long enough run to think to himself, what am I doing? The FA should through the book at him and i expect him to get a 6 match ban at least.Lets hope the FA have the guts this time round to do so.

Ellen Leigh (Arsenal fan) says...

The worst thing about Adebayor is that he says he has no idea what he has done wrong!!!!!! He needs to understand that such reckless behaviour and running the lenght of the pitch to the opposing fans is just plain stupid and could have had dire consequences. I hope for both charges he geta a lenghty ban as he certainly deserves it. I totally agree with Mark, what was Mark Hughes watching !!!!!
