Manchester United hero Michael Carrick insists The Red Devils expected a tough encounter in their UEFA Champions League meeting with Wolfsburg.

Sir Alex Ferguson's troops did it the hard way by coming from a goal down to see off the Bundesliga champions at Old Trafford.

Edin Dzeko headed the visitors in front, but goals from Ryan Giggs and Carrick maintained United's 100 per cent start in Group B.

Carrick is delighted United have taken six points out of six following their group opening win against Besiktas.

The former Spurs man admits The Red Devils were not at their best at a wet Old Trafford, but he was pleased with their fighting spirit.

Tough game

"We expected a tough game. They got some really big threats going forward," he told Sky Sports News.

"We were prepared for that and we knew the pitch with the weather it was going to be a quick game.

"We were conscious that we wanted to play well tonight and to build upon what we had in Turkey.

"To get six points out of the two games we're very happy with that. I thought first half we played some decent stuff at times.

"We couldn't quite open them up. I had a decent chance. I'm glad I made amends for that.

"We had the opportunity. We had a good spell before they scored. They scored and thankfully we managed to step it up a gear."
