Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor believes his punishment for celebrating his goal against Arsenal was 'excessive'.

Adebayor had been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association after running the length of the field to celebrate in front of the Arsenal fans after scoring in last month's 4-2 win over his former club.

The FA handed out a suspended two-match ban to Adebayor and also fined the Togo ace £25,000 for the incident.

However, while he accepts his punishment, Adebayor believes the FA have been too harsh in their reaction to the matter.

"They have punished me for celebrating a goal and I accept it, but I think it is excessive," Adebayor told The People.

"But now I have to forget it and just think about scoring goals without any problems.

"If I play in the Emirates and score I will celebrate of course, but I will do it with my fans.

"I don't want to talk about Arsenal at the moment. I remind them that we beat them 4-2, that's all."

Bad afternoon

Adebayor was also hit with a three-match ban for violent conduct after a stamp on Robin van Persie in the same game, with the suspension ruling him out of the recent Manchester derby.

Premier League champions United scored a dramatic injury-time goal to win 4-3, but Adebayor feels the result would have been different if he had been playing.

He added: "I had a bad afternoon against Manchester United because I am sure that if I had played that day then I would have scored a goal.

"It was a shame that we lost in added time. United did not deserve to win - a fair result would have been a draw."
