Stefan Maierhofer has admitted the physical nature of training at Wolves has taken him by surprise.

The Austrian striker moved to Molineux from Rapid Vienna at the end of August and has been tipped to make a big impact in the Premier League by manager Mick McCarthy.

He has already opened his account for his new club but faces a battle to secure regular first-team football with a number of other forwards in the squad.

Maierhofer is doing his best to impress in training but concedes it has been difficult to adjust to the intensity of the sessions.

"People get stuck into you in brutal fashion during training," he said.

"I need to wear shinpads all the time - otherwise I'd have had my leg broken by now.

"The challenges are different to what I'm used to. We have a 35-man squad, and everybody wants to get into the team."
