Marseille coach Didier Deschamps hailed his side's spirit after the French outfit beat FC Zurich 1-0 in Switzerland.

Gabriel Heinze's superb volley in the 69th minute proved the difference between the sides and gave Marseille their first win in UEFA Champions League Group C.

It helped Deschamps' side leapfrog Zurich in the Group C table, with the pair both three points behind joint leaders AC Milan and Real Madrid with three games left to play.

The Marseille boss was pleased with the way his side could grind out a result while not at their best.

He said: "It wasn't a great match, there were lots of mistakes, perhaps due to our rivals who played with great physical presence and impact.

"We had difficulty in getting going. It's good sometimes to win when you're suffering, but we can do better."

Deschamps is now targeting a victory over the Swiss outfit in a fortnight's time, especially as Milan beat Real Madrid 3-2 in the Bernabeu on Wednesday night.

He said: "AC Milan beating Real Madrid isn't necessarily a good thing, so to maintain hope of going through to the next stage we have to beat Zurich (at home) in a fortnight."
