Bayern Munich boss Louis van Gaal confessed his side were not good enough after their 2-0 defeat by Bordeaux in the UEFA Champions League but the Dutch manager felt luck conspired against them.

The Bundesliga giants saw their eight-match unbeaten home record in Europe snapped as goals from Yoann Gourcuff and Marouane Chamakh saw the French champions seal their place in the last 16 of the competition.

Bayern, meanwhile, face an uphill struggle to even progress after Juventus went four points clear of the Germans with a 1-0 win over Maccabi Haifa.

With just two games in Group A remaining, Bayern must win their final two group games - including a potential decider against Juve in the Stadio Olimpico - and Van Gaal is hoping his side get the rub of the green in the final two fixtures.

Small chance

"In a top game you have to score and we did not have any luck tonight," Van Gaal said after the game.

"We were not lucky but also not good enough but we are still not eliminated. We still have a small chance."

Whereas Bayern are toying with disaster, Bordeaux are the toast of France after they booked their spot in the last 16 of the Champions League for the first time.

"We were solid tonight," playmaker and opening scorer on the night Gourcuff said after the famous win in Munich. "We controlled the match after the first goal, though we scored that goal with our first chance of the match."

Gourcuff added that last year's early exit at the group stage had taught the team a lesson, adding: "We learned from that experience. We matured."
