Wayne Rooney has reiterated that he wants to stay at Manchester United for the rest of his career and have a shot at matching the achievements of Ryan Giggs.

The 24-year-old is in his sixth season at Old Trafford but knows he has some way to go if he is to emulate his decorated team-mate.

Giggs has made a record 815 appearances for the Red Devils compared to Rooney's 252 while the Welshman has won 11 Premier League titles and two European Cups to the England international's three league crowns and one European triumph.

Former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo has tried to persuade the ex-Everton youngster to join him at Real Madrid but Rooney insists he cannot see himself leaving the Theatre of Dreams.

"I have always said I would love to end my career at this club," he told MUTV.

"If I can get anywhere near what Ryan has done it would be an amazing achievement because I regard him as the perfect role model.

Great respect

"You must have great respect for the way his life is and the way he handles himself. The things he has done throughout his career and the things he has won are unbelievable.

"Everyone looks up to him and if I even get close to the number of games he has played I would be delighted."

Having recently become a father Rooney knows the extra responsibility he now carries and the striker believes he has changed his ways on the pitch to become more of a role model to younger fans.

"The profile has changed me," he added. "From when I first got into the England team until I was 20 or 21, I was a bit naive.

"I used to go out and do different things. Obviously in the end, you realise you can't because there are young kids watching. You have to try and set an example.

"It is something you are aware of and something you need to keep an eye on."
