Bent: England recall
Darren Bent has been recalled to the England squad for the friendly against Brazil, with Stephen Warnock and Tom Huddlestone also earning call-ups.
Sunderland striker Bent has been in fine form this season following his move to the Stadium of Light and he has been rewarded with a place in Fabio Capello's plans for next Saturday's game in Qatar.
Bent has appeared just once for England since Capello became coach, with his outing coming in the friendly against Germany 12 months ago.
However, with Carlton Cole and Emile Heskey ruled out of the Brazil game through injury, Bent will vie with Wayne Rooney, Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch for a starting spot.
Aston Villa full-back Warnock has been included in the squad as Ashley Cole has been left out due to concerns over his fitness, despite the left-back playing 90 minutes in Chelsea's win over Manchester United on Sunday.
Warnock has made one appearance for England to date as a late substitute against Trinidad & Tobago and he could get the nod over Wayne Bridge to face Brazil.
Huddlestone has the opportunity to win his first cap after the former England Under-21 international was picked due to the absence of injured Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.
Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is also missing due to injury, while there have been no recalls for his team-mates Gary Neville and Michael Owen.
The friendly against Brazil is the penultimate game that England will play before Capello has to name his provisional squad for next summer's World Cup in South Africa.
England squad: Foster (Manchester United), Green (West Ham), Hart (Birmingham City - loan); Bridge, Lescott (both Manchester City), Brown (Manchester United), Cahill (Bolton), Johnson (Liverpool), Terry (Chelsea), Upson (West Ham), Warnock (Aston Villa); Barry, Wright-Phillips (both Manchester City), Beckham* (Los Angeles Galaxy), Carrick (Manchester United), Huddlestone, Jenas (both Tottenham), Lampard (Chelsea), Milner, Young (both Aston Villa); Bent (Sunderland), Crouch, Defoe (both Tottenham), Rooney (Manchester United).
* If Los Angeles Galaxy win their MLS Conference semi-final against Chivas USA on Sunday night David Beckham will be unavailable for selection.

Give Bent a go, it's about time. I still can't see what's so special about Wayne Rooney. If I watch Torres I watch goals, if I watch Drogba the same, even the likes of Defoe and Bent outscore Rooney season in season out. He gets labelled a world class striker but doesnt score half as many as the Villa's, the Ibrahimovic's, the Eto'o's etc... When I watch him play he just barges around, never has the guile to take on his man and doesnt get his shots on target. He drifts into midfield all the time instead of being up top, which I think is a ploy to conceal his poor scoring ratio, allowing Utd fans to turn around and say how much he battles. I don't care what Utd do but England have a good midfield, we don't need Rooney clogging it up, we need a selfish shoot on site striker. I honestly believe that dropping Rooney for the likes of a Bent or a Defoe would lead to more England goals and more success. Rooney went 2yrs without an England goal but played every game, he regularly goes months without a Utd goal, the world cup lasts 3 weeks, if he has one of his droughts we win nothing. Please publish this comment, I fear Sky favour Utd and I would like you to prove me wrong.

Huddlestone and Jenas are not good enough to play for England and they won't be going to the world cup. Suprised there is no Owen again and Joe Cole isn't there. Glad to see Bent has been given a chance. Rooney is the best striker England have got and not Bent like most people are saying on here (mainly Sunderland fans).

Bent is well deserved but owen must not be forgotten if he can prove fitness(i know how many times everyone heard that before)..also..what has scott parker got to do to get a call up? have him over huddlestone any day of the week!!

Andrew Coburn (Newcastle United fan) says...
Joe Cole, Michael Owen not called up because they have not played enough same as why Heskey is not back in squad ... Because he has not played often enough to prove anything. Best way to pick on performances and not rep !!

Good to see Tom Huddlestone in the squad, and Bent deserves his shot but am sure he will go off the boil like he is starting to now.

John Davison-white (Sunderland fan) says...
Its only right that Darren Bent is in the England squad,as capello said - he will pick players on form !!!!!!!! top english striker in the gaolscoring charts, enough said. By the way, Mike Ashley is a Legend !!

Well Done Darren Bent. You've won me a few quid this season mate with your goals for us Makems,so here is hoping for a few more quid thanks to you in next year's world cup! Now Andy Reid to get a call up for Republic of Ireland - how can he not be?

Robbie Jones (Derby County fan) says...
Well done Tom Huddlestone! Seeing him come through the ranks at Derby County, we knew he would be destined for international football! For Derby's sake I hope he plays a part in a game as this will release a clause in his contract to pay Derby X amount of money from when he went to Spurs.

Rob Cook (Sunderland fan) says...
well done benty. He deserve's it. You can't be top english scorer and not get in the squad, there would definetley be something wrong. Lets hope he takes his chance because he is ten times better than heskey.

Jason Mcgovern (Tottenham Hotspur fan) says...
BIG TOM!!! Even as a Spurs fan I'll admit his form in the past 4/5 games has been woeful, good passer but when his radar is off he contributes not a lot else - he was also overrun by Man U, Chelsea & Arsenal - and not sure he has improved any aspect of his game in past 4/5 years. Mid-table premier league player and that's about it.

It's great to finally see a Sunderland player in the England squad, well done Darren.

Andrew Hayes (Charlton Athletic fan) says...
I still think its crazy a player of Michael Owen's calibre is still not in the squad, he has scored a few this season, he is still the second best british striker behind Rooney in the country! He deserves a chance, when even Crouch cant even get in to the Spurs first team, I still think Owen is twice the player Defoe is.

Gary Bourley (Chelsea fan) says...
So no Joe Cole and Michael Owen, seems odd. There seems to be a few obvious players left out, considering this is now a warm up for the WC.

No Joe Cole? What a perfect game for him - the most talented player we have. Beckham, Carrick, Huddlestone & Jenas all selected - none of them in the same class!!

Happy to See Bent and Huddlestone in the squad about time as there are both good players i still fink that england need beckham as he makes england tick also young has been given too many chances for england he does not produce (I still fink england will get to the Quater finals but that is far as they can go)
