Republic of Ireland midfielder Liam Miller has withdrawn from the squad for Saturday's crunch clash against France.

The Hibernian player is out for the Republic after undergoing a scan on his injured calf on Tuesday, which confirmed he will have to miss the first leg of the World Cup play-off at Croke Park.

The former Manchester United and Sunderland midfielder will not be replaced by manager Giovanni Trapattoni, and Miller will return to Hibs to receive further treatment on the knock.

Reading striker Shane Long did not join up with the squad because of a similar problem, while reserve goalkeeper Joe Murphy sat out the last few minutes of Wednesday's training session at Gannon Park.

Miller is expected to be back for the second leg of the play-off next Wednesday, as the Republic look to book their place in South Africa next year.
