Sunderland boss Steve Bruce fears goalkeeper Craig Gordon will be out until February with a broken arm.

Gordon suffered the injury in the Black Cats' final game before the international break at Tottenham following a challenge by Jermain Defoe.

The Scotland international had reclaimed his place in the Sunderland team following a knee injury and Bruce has cursed his side's luck after Gordon joined Lee Cattermole as a long-term absentee.

"Craig's injury is the most disappointing thing to come out of the last couple of weeks," Bruce told the club's official website.

"It looks as if it's going to be three months. We've not had much luck in that respect - that's two serious injuries in a month."

Marton Fulop has been tipped to take Gordon's place between the posts, but Bruce has also challenged youngster Trevor Carson to push for the No.1 spot.

Bruce added: "Marton's been there and done it before, but Trevor has a chance to stake his claim, too.

"I was impressed with the way he handled himself in pre-season, so it's not a foregone conclusion that I'm going to pick Marton. Trevor has a chance to come in, too."

There has been some bright news on the injury front for Bruce, though, with Bolo Zenden (hip) and John Mensah (calf) hoping to return for Saturday's game against Arsenal.
