Lucas Neill remains confident Everton can turn around their season despite their poor run of form.

Sunday's Merseyside derby defeat to Liverpool leaves Everton just three points off the drop zone after winning just once in their last eight games.

Neill, who appeared as a late substitute in the 2-0 loss to Liverpool at Goodison Park, believes there is enough quality in the Toffees squad to get their campaign back on track.

"If you look at the pivotal moments in the game, the deflected shot put us behind, the fantastic double save from Reina which would have put us back in to the game and then we were probably chasing the game a great save and right place, right time for Kuyt to make it 2-0 and the game's over," Neill told Sky Sports News.

"It could have been so different and it would have, and still could be, the springboard to our season."

It was Neill's first taste of a Merseyside derby and the Australian is keen to earn bragging rights for Everton in the next meeting at Anfield later in the season.

"It was a fantastic atmosphere," added Neill. "I would have liked to have played a lot more in it, but five minutes is better than none.

"It was just disappointing not to have heard the Everton roar had a goal gone in against the Reds. We will have to wait until Anfield and wait for the return and hope we can get revenge."

Neill is optimistic Everton can bounce back from the derby disappointment by getting a positive result against high-flying Tottenham next time out.

"Something will turn around soon," insisted Neill.

"I believe in the squad, I believe in the players and sooner or later it will turn around because of the quality and we need to make that happen sooner rather than later, so why not do it with Tottenham at home this weekend.

"They are a massive team who will be right up for it because of their position in the league, but it is also a game that we will know we need to be at our best to win and I think it is going to be a cracking game as a result."
