Wolves manager Mick McCarthy insists there is no magic formula to restore belief in his players.

McCarthy's side have gone eight Premier League games without a win and turned in one of their most disappointing performances in the 1-0 defeat to Birmingham on Sunday.

Wolves now sit four points adrift of the safety zone ahead of their clash with fellow strugglers Bolton at Molineux on Saturday.

McCarthy concedes his players are suffering from a crisis of confidence but insists they will have to come out stronger than they did against Blues.

No medication

"We didn't start. We didn't get going. We didn't lay a finger on them or a boot on them," said McCarthy.

"They were 1-0 up after three minutes and then it was really difficult to do anything about it.

"Confidence is a growing problem at the moment. You can watch it out there but you can't inject it into them though. There is no medication you can take.

"You can forget all the football. If we don't start and don't compete, like we didn't in the first half against Birmingham, then we've no foundation on which to build."

Striker Kevin Doyle puts the lack of confidence down to heavy defeats against Arsenal and Chelsea in the weeks prior to the game against Blues.

Bad patch

"We just need to get a bit of confidence back. I think the two results against Arsenal and Chelsea have hurt us a bit and we need to recover from those.

"We are 13-14 games into the season so the Birmingham match was not the be all and end all but it was a massive match for us.

"It has been difficult for all of us but we have to forget about it and win next week.

"We have the players here. We had showed some good performances up until the last couple of weeks, drawing at Everton and against Aston Villa.

"We have the players here but we need to get ourselves out of this bad patch."
