Manchester City manager Mark Hughes believes his side demonstrated 'courage and bravery' in their 2-1 victory over Premier League leaders Chelsea.

The Welshman saw his players come from one down as Emmanuel Adebayor cancelled out his own goal before Carlo Tevez converted a match-winning free-kick.

Hughes was delighted with a win for City, who had been held to a long stretch of league draws, and could not fault his team's attitude.

The former Chelsea player said: "We had to show courage and bravery. When you are playing a team like Chelsea you need to believe in your own ability.

"Some sides give them too much respect, which just allows them to create opportunities and win games."

Frank Lampard had a late penalty saved by Shay Given as City held on for the win and Hughes believes the pressure may have affected the England international.

"Sometimes things happen that you don't expect and I didn't expect Frank to miss," said Hughes.

"In fairness to him, I think he understood the importance of converting that chance, which brought extra pressure."
