Valencia moved up to third in La Liga after a battling win at Athletic Bilbao, while nine-man Villarreal overcame Getafe at home.

Racing Santander secured just a second win of the Primera Liga season as Mallorca kept up their push for UEFA Champions League football.

Jeremy Mathieu scored an 82nd minute winner as Valencia grabbed a 2-1 success over Bilbao at San Mames.

After a scoreless first half, Bilbao took a 57th minute lead through Iker Muniain's close-range finish, only for David Villa to level just four minutes later.

Bilbao had Koikili sent off for a second yellow card on 74 minutes and Mathieu then fired home the decisive goal eight minutes from time.

The hosts had a golden chance to snatch a draw on 87 minutes, but David Lopez missed his penalty after Javi Martinez had been fouled by David Navarro.

Villarreal are making progress up the table and twice came from behind before claiming a 3-2 home triumph over Getafe.

Pedro Leon gave Getafe a third minute lead, but Joan Capdevila equalised for the Yellow Submarines on 17 minutes.

Roberto Soldado restored Getafe's lead from the penalty spot on 52 minutes after Cani had been sent off for bringing down Francisco Casquero.

Substitute Santi Cazorla levelled things up again on 67 minutes and Capdevila scored an 87th minute winner, while there was still time for Villarreal's Angel Lopez to be dismissed.

Lowly Racing produced a stunning second-half display to crush Espanyol 4-0 away from home, with Sergio Canales scoring twice.

The visitors made the breakthrough four minutes after half-time when Henrique headed home a free-kick from Canales, who doubled the lead three minutes later.

Mohamed Tchite scored from the penalty spot on 68 minutes after Ivan Pillud had brought down Oscar Serrano, who fed Canales to score Racing's fourth goal on 72 minutes.

Mallorca also slammed in four goals as Aritz Aduriz netted a goal in each half in a convincing 4-1 home triumph over Real Zaragoza.

Aduriz opened the scoring on 38 minutes and then latched on to Victor's through ball to make it 2-0 midway through the second half.

Mario Suarez headed home Borja Valero's free-kick on 75 minutes and Alhassane Keita added the fourth on 83 minutes before Andre Herrera headed home a late consolation for Zaragoza.

Tenerife gained an important three points at the bottom end of the table after coming from behind to beat Sporting Gijon 2-1 at home.

Diego Castro gave Gijon a fourth minute lead, but second-half efforts from Ricardo Leon and Nino earned Tenerife the win.

Malaga salvaged a late 1-1 draw at home to Osasuna, who took a 47th minute lead through Masoud Shojaei's close-range finish.

Duda hit the post with a free-kick for Malaga on 68 minutes before Apono showed his team-mate how to do it by firing home the equaliser seven minutes from time.
