West Brom missed the chance to narrow the gap on Newcastle at the top of the Championship table, while Nottingham Forest drew with Sheffield United and Middlesbrough lost to Blackpool.

West Brom could have moved to within one point of Newcastle, who play Coventry on Wednesday, with victory over fellow high-flyers Cardiff but they were beaten 2-0 courtesy of goals from Chris Burke and Peter Whittingham.

Cardiff are now up to third after Nottingham Forest played out a goalless draw with rapidly improving Sheffield United to extend their unbeaten run to 12 games.

Bristol City ended a run of five games without a win by overcoming promotion hopefuls Leicester 3-1 at The Walkers Stadium to rise to eighth.

Gordon Strachan recorded his first win as Middlesbrough manager over the weekend but it was a familiar tale of disappointment at The Riverside as Gary Taylor-Fletcher scored twice to inspire Blackpool to a comfortable 3-0 success.

Swansea pushed into the play-off zone as they beat relegation-threatened Plymouth 1-0 thanks to a second-half goal from on-loan striker Lee Trundle.

Sheffield Wednesday's winless streak stretched to eight games as Doncaster came out on top in a competitive Yorkshire derby, Billy Sharp notching the only goal of the game at the Keepmoat Stadium.

The Owls remain just above the drop zone with Ipswich still in the bottom three on goal difference following a 0-0 draw with bottom club Peterborough at Portman Road.

Reading claimed three points at The Madejski Stadium for the first time since January in their last home game but they fell back into bad habits against Crystal Palace as the visitors came away with a thrilling 4-2 triumph.

There was a stalemate at Deepdale as the clash between out-of-form Preston and Derby failed to produce any goals.
