West Brom missed the chance to narrow the gap on Newcastle at the top of the Championship table, while Nottingham Forest drew with Sheffield United and Middlesbrough lost to Blackpool.

West Brom could have moved to within one point of Newcastle, who play Coventry on Wednesday, with victory over fellow high-flyers Cardiff but they were beaten 2-0 courtesy of goals from Chris Burke and Peter Whittingham.

Cardiff are now up to third after Nottingham Forest played out a goalless draw with rapidly improving Sheffield United to extend their unbeaten run to 12 games.
