Rafa Benitez was pleased with a vital three points after Liverpool scraped a nervy 2-1 victory over Wigan at Anfield on Wednesday.

David Ngog headed the hosts ahead in the ninth minute but the Reds could not extend their advantage, despite a host of chances.

Jason Scotland almost made them pay but his effort hit the crossbar before Fernando Torres netted the vital second goal on 79 minutes.

Charles N'Zogbia scored in stoppage time to set up a tense finale but the Reds held on for the crucial win, which raises them up to sixth in the table, five points off the UEFA Champions League spots.

Benitez told Sky Sports News: "I felt we had some chances and we could have scored the second goal earlier and maybe it would have been totally different the game.

"At the end we won, we needed to get three points and that was the most important thing."

The Reds boss added: "We had some chances - Yossi (Benayoun) had one or two chances, (Dirk ) Kuyt had another one, (Daniel) Agger another one but, you know, in football you have to score if you want to be relaxed and to enjoy the rest of the game."
