Martin Petrov has hit out at ex-Manchester City manager Mark Hughes, saying he did not get a fair crack of the whip.

The Bulgaria international started Roberto Mancini's first game in charge against Stoke on Boxing Day and scored their opening goal in a 2-0 win.

Petrov is happy with his goalscoring exploits for the club, but is unhappy that every time he scored he would then be benched by Hughes.

The 30-year-old is upset by the turmoil he has had to endure over the past six months and does not want to reveal all just yet.

"Every time I score, I go to the bench!" he told the club's official website. "Now is not the time to speak about my situation.

"In the past six months too many things have happened with me. Maybe in the future I will speak 100 per cent.

"But what he was doing with me I think was unfair."

Not good enough

Petrov has blasted City's defending under Hughes, stating conceding nine times in just three outings was simply not good enough.

The skilful winger was pleased City got off to winning start under Mancini and believes there is a lot more to come from his squad.

"We know we can play better but we have trained only four days with the new manager," he continued.

"I think we will get better. We were all a little bit nervous because everybody wanted to show him what they can do.

"I know that I can play better than today. I've not played for two months, and in the second half I was tired. But when I play, I always try to give my best.

"Everyone is surprised at the quick change of manager but we are football players who earn our money and must still concentrate because we have games to play. We must try to win every game, that is our job."
