Portsmouth have announced they hope to pay their players on Wednesday after they failed to do so on Tuesday.

The cash-strapped club were due to pay the players their late December wages on Tuesday, but they were unable to transfer the funds.

Pompey's non-playing staff were paid their December wages on Monday, but the club have not been able to process the payments to the players.

However, the club remain optimistic that the players will finally get paid on Wednesday after the club secured a short-term bank loan.

PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor said the club were hopeful of paying the players on Wednesday.

"We were expecting the players to be paid today but that has not happened. We have been told by the club that they are hopeful of paying them tomorrow," said Taylor.

This is not the first time this season Portsmouth have been unable to pay players' wages on time and the club's financial future remains uncertain with clubs still owed money by Portsmouth over player transfers.

The struggling Fratton Park outfit also have a transfer embargo over them stopping them from signing any new players this month.

Mess

Meanwhile, Daniel Azougy, the lawyer taken on by Portsmouth to restructure their debts, has admitted the club is in "a mess".

Former owner Alexandre Gaydamak says he is owed almost £30million and there is also a winding-up petition from HM Revenue and Customs looming.

Azougy told The Guardian: "First of all I hope we are going to pay the players' salaries as promised. But nobody knows how much [the club] is a mess.

"When people and the fans of Portsmouth know how big they will appreciate what we are trying to do."
