The Professional Footballers' Association has been assured Portsmouth's players will be paid their wages by the weekend.

Pompey's players were due to be paid December's overdue wages on Tuesday, but that was then delayed a further 24 hours to Wednesday.

It has now been confirmed the Fratton Park stars have yet to be paid, although PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor has been given assurances.

Taylor believes that following talks with the cash-strapped Premier League strugglers their players will receive their wages in the coming days.

Short-term

"Further to talks we are confident the wages will be paid this week to resolve the short-term position but the long-term position still needs to be resolved," said Taylor.

"This is a serious situation that involves the Premier League and the PFA, as well as the concerns of supporters of the club and the players."

It is the third time this season Portsmouth, who are also under a transfer embargo over their financial difficulties, have failed to pay their players on time.

Portsmouth say their players will be paid on Thursday.
