Skysports.com understands Newcastle are closing in on the signing of Bolton defender Danny Shittu.

Newcastle have lined up a move for the Nigeria international to bolster their squad for the second half of the season.

Shittu is well down the pecking order at Bolton and is thought to be keen on a move away from the Reebok Stadium in search of regular first-team action.

QPR were also thought to be keen on signing Shittu, but Newcastle are hoping to steal a march on their Championship rivals by luring him to St James' Park.

Magpies boss Chris Hughton is in the market for defensive reinforcements and sees Shittu as a key addition as they look to keep their promotion bid on track.
