Plymouth assistant manager John Carver has decided against joining Brian Laws' backroom staff at Burnley.

Laws was quick to offer the former Newcastle coach a position at Turf Moor after taking over the reins on Wednesday following Owen Coyle's move to Bolton.

But Carver, currently No.2 to Paul Mariner, is understood to have agreed a new and improved contract at Argyle and is focused on hauling them out of their Championship relegation scrap.

Carver said: "The club's board has a five-year plan and I want to be part of that. I felt I had to be loyal to Paul for giving me this opportunity.

"In the short-term we have a lot of hard work to keep Plymouth in the Championship."

Laws has already brought in former Scunthorpe and Sheffield Wednesday assistant Russ Wilcox, while 38-year-old captain Graham Alexander will take up a new role as player-coach.
