Bristol City's proposals for the construction of a new stadium have been rubber-stamped by the local council.

The Robins are hoping to vacate Ashton Gate, their home since 1904, and move to a purpose-built venue at Ashton Lane.

Their plans were approved in principle in November, but were given the green light at a meeting of Bristol City Council on Wednesday after the club responded to a number of questions regarding the stadium's viability.

Construction cannot start until the application has been approved by the secretary of state, as the ground is to be built on green-belt land, but chief executive Colin Sexstone is delighted to see the project progressing at pace.

"It is a good result," he told the club's official website in the wake of the council go-ahead.

"We have got through this big hurdle. There are a few more to go, but this is good news."
