Darren Fletcher has admitted the influence of Sir Alex Ferguson has left him in no doubt that he wishes to remain at Manchester United.

The Scotland captain revealed that the United boss sought him out for a chat about his future in 2008 and the 26-year-old has not looked back, becoming a regular starter for the Premier League holders in the past two seasons.

Fletcher, talking in an interview with the official Carling Cup programme, was considering his future after struggling to hold down a place in the first team.

"I was still having doubts because I was in a fairly strong position with only a year left to run on my contract," he said.

"But the manager came to me. The contract talk was put to one side and our discussion was mainly about playing time."

The midfielder was the subject of interest from several clubs, including Birmingham, where former Scotland boss Alex McLeish was well aware of his talents.

But Ferguson moved quickly to assure Fletcher his future lied with the club he signed for at the age of 16, and he is keen to stay for as long as possible.

"He (Ferguson) said there had been offers but he didn't want me to go," he said.

"Deep down I just wanted to show what I was capable of.

"That is what drove me on and what I want to keep maintaining now because I want to be here for the rest of my career and leave some sort of mark on the club."
