Hearts boss Jim Jefferies admits he is resigned to Jose Goncalves quitting the club at the end of the season.

Jefferies had been hoping to convince contract rebel Goncalves to accept the "unbelievable offer" made by the Edinburgh club earlier this year.

But it appears the Portuguese defender is resolved to leaving Tynecastle when his current deal expires in the summer.

Goncalves has been exiled from Jefferies' squad over the issue but was handed a shock recall for last weekend's defeat at Dundee United.

That was only because of Hearts' crippling injury list and it appears the player will be made an outcast again as soon as the current crisis eases.

"I hope he has a change of heart but, having spoken with him about it for long enough, it's highly unlikely. We have to move on," Jefferies told the Edinburgh Evening News."Jose has been made a fantastic offer but he isn't going to sign for that.

"He is a good player and we want him to stay but, if his mind is made up, and he's moving on, then others have to be given a chance.

"I can't leave players out who want to be here. They need to play to give me a chance to assess whether I want them or not."
