Manchester City have told Shaun Wright-Phillips that they will not discuss a new deal until the end of the season.

The Blues are keen to steer clear of any unnecessary distractions as they attempt to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League.

That means a possible extension to Wright-Phillips' current contract must be put to one side until their fate has been determined.

The England international has expressed his disappointment at not being offered fresh terms, but Roberto Mancini insists the 28-year-old winger remains an integral part of his plans.

"Shaun is an important player but we have time in the future to speak about his contract," said the Italian.

"Now it is important he plays well for the team in this game, the next game.

"It is vital the players play 100 per cent for the club because we have one important target.

"Shaun gives 100 per cent and that makes me happy. I think he is happy and I prefer it when the players speak with me."

Improving

Another player who puts a smile on Mancini's face is talismanic frontman Carlos Tevez.

The burly Argentine inspired City to a 4-2 victory over title-chasing Chelsea last time out, despite returning home to resolve a family matter just days before the game, and his attitude has made quite an impression on his boss.

"I am very happy with Carlos because he is a strong player, an important player and someone who works hard for the team. He was born to play football," said Mancini.

"I hope he continues in this way and scores more goals until the end of the season.

"I think he can improve in the next week, the next month and the next year because he is still a fairly young player.

"I think all the players will be feeling better after a good rest. I am happy because this week we have been working well. I think we can do a good job on Sunday (against Sunderland)."
