Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has questioned the club's ambition and says he is thinking about his future.

The Reds forward has been part of a side that has had a disappointing campaign so far - Monday's defeat at Wigan dented their chances of a top-four Premier League finish and a 1-0 reverse to Lille in the Europa League on Thursday leaves them with a tough task of progressing into the next round.

Many have speculated that Liverpool's key players could leave Anfield if they do not qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League, but Torres has played down such reports.

However, the 25-year-old, who has scored 13 league goals in 18 appearances so far this term, says that Rafa Benitez needs to bring in more quality players to bolster the squad.

"It's too soon to talk, I honestly think that we're going to be fourth, but for me Champions League qualification isn't so important," he told Spanish newspaper AS.

"The really important thing is that the club makes a big effort and brings in important players, who will improve the quality of the squad.

"We need four or five top-class players to compete, better than we have here, who will make us grit our teeth and do everything we can to try and keep our places.

"Without reinforcements next year we will once again be fighting to be fourth.

"I want to fight next year to win the Premier League, to win the Champions League or the Europa League, but for this there have to be signings."

Torres moved to Liverpool in 2007 from Atletico Madrid, and has proved a huge success on Merseyside with a phenomenal goals-to-games ratio.

Future

He insists that he is happy at the club but, although he says he wants to stay, 'El Nino' admits he is considering his future.

He added: "There are so many circumstances and so many things that you have to take into account that it is too soon to talk about that. But I have this and three more years of my contract.

"I've left my home and it's clear that I owe Liverpool many things, and I'm very happy here.

"The fans have treated my like one of their own, but I'm going to think about my future and hopefully it will be here. I think these fans deserve to win.

"Beyond thinking about me, I think the club deserve to get back to winning (trophies), but they know themselves that right now that it's far off.

"The fans are worried about players going, it's a problem when you start to fear that your players are going because you know it's because the club is not moving forward, but I don't think that is going to be the situation here.

"Since the arrival of (managing director) Christian Purslow, Liverpool have had an important boost, we signed with a big-money sponsor to match Real Madrid, then things are going to go forward."

David Thompson (Liverpool fan) says...

Well this is a huge worry, when do you ever hear Liverpool players saying there are considering there future, never. Leaving Liverpool was always a step down, not any more, We have turned into a laughing stock and the performance at Wigan on Monday shocked me. although I blame Hicks and Gillet for the majority of our problems, blame also has to lie at the door of Rafa, some of his tactical decisions are baffling and his record in the transfer market is poor. wholesale changes are needed from top to bottom and fast, otherwise we can say goodbye to the likes of Torres.

Carl Marshall (Manchester United fan) says...

Just watch " El Nino " Nini OUT if Liverpool fail to reach Champions League next year . Barcelona will take him next year and he will be playing his football in a warmer climate , where he prefers after all . Just like Ronaldo for us , these Euro star players have no allegiance to the UK . The badge kissing sickens me . Just look at that tart Adebayor . He would sign for Barnsley if they paid him enough .

Tom Smith (Liverpool fan) says...

Can't blame Torres....Rafa has lost the plot , too many average players in team and the American owners wont spend money on better players....so at this rate Liverpool will be trying to avoid relegation next year.

I have been a Liverpool supporter for over 40 years I have watched the great sides that played the football that Shankly and Paisley coached with such ease and made the players believe they were champions. A simple philosophy with basic skills and a togetherness as players all playing for one another.Every time the team came out to play they believed they would win they only thought one thing winning not can we finish and settle for a place to qualify and hope to get there no Souness Hughes thompson Callaghan, Toshack,Keegan,Daglish, all respected the tradition Torres is dissapointed at the moment and needs encouragement its no good blaming one another yet alone the manager it comes from within that motivation that can excell a person to great things search deeply and action and rise to fight the good fight it will turn and will come around I have no doubt about this Liverpool football club has that ability to rise from the worst slump in their history Lets go and prove to the world who we are lets silence the critics and play the way we can boys come on come on Everytime you wear that shirt look at the teams who brought such joy and celebrations its only a matter of time and the time is now.!!! Fernando Torres you have all the sprit of past teams show your team mates the way forward it will come and come soon.

Dave Burch says...

He won't be the only one looking at his options in May. Liverpool will not finish 4th, nor will they progress in the Europa league, due to lack of morale and investment in the first team. Without massive investment into the first team squad the second the season finishes, a whole host of players will be looking to leave. We seem to have invested fairly heavily in young promising foreign players, but they are years away from the first team, if they actually go on to make it. We are on the downward spiral and can't attract top quality players that can make a difference, because we can't compete financially with Man U, Chelsea and Man City. Then with huge European teams having more financial clout than us aswell, such as Real Madrid, Barca, Inter, AC Milan, Bayern Munich to name but a few, the best players want to be at these teams. Why? Because they get regular Chamions League slots, which Liverpool can't guarantee them anymore. People will say I am being negative, but rose coloured specs don't fit me and I can only see regression and not progression. Watching LFC has become painful and boring and you know it is bad when watching Championship football is more exciting and satisfying. Perhaps to progress we need to go in a fresh direction and the loss of Rafa and certain players might just be the catalyst the club needs. Perhaps Rafa and Torres to Real Madrid for huge money isn't such a huge disaster, but only if the ownership changes, investment is guaranteed and the 80 million for Torres is used for new blood and not debt repayments

Jonathan Kelly (Liverpool fan) says...

If Torres goes, it is a clear indication that this once greatest club in Europe are moving in the wrong direction, i.e further away from the big '3'??? If Liverpool can find cash to invest in 3 - 4 quality players to make current squad fight for thier places, we can take up where we left off in 08/09 season - challenging for 1st & 2nd!, not 4th & 5th!! Please don't go nando :(

Michael Egan (Liverpool fan) says...

The fact the he is saying that champions league qualification is not the end of the world in terms of him staying, should be a major boost to all reds fans.... because after wigan, this is now a very slim hope. It appears to me that he is prepared to give us one more season to prove that we can challenge or he'll be off and to be honest who could blame him. We are very lucky to that the guy has some loyalty unlike so many in the modern era. We need get rid of Kuyt, Babel, Lucas, Riera........and hate to say this, but if we could still get 20-30 mil for Gerrard then sorry I would let him go. He has been fantastic for us, but this season he has been very poor and with a tough world cup on the horizon, I can't see him getting any better.

Keith Seery (Liverpool fan) says...

Torres is right we need 2 get World Class players in the squad. If the owners r saying were able 2 spend 100m this summer we hv 2 get David Villa 4 (50m). Then try and get David Silva 4 ( 15m), And get Joe Cole 4 ( 20m). And get rid of the likes of Lucas, Insua, El Zhar etc.

Matty Sampson (Liverpool fan) says...

Exacly right What nando is sayin there is no quality in our side and we should be fearing Torres leaving us if we dont move forward and challenge the likes of Man Utd Chelsea etc. Rafa jus hasnt brought in the quality we needed and its showed this season.

Steve G (Liverpool fan) says...

Torres is obviously critical of the current Liverpool Squad, saying what many fans have been thinking, the current team is just not good enough! This has nothing to do with the owners, the responsibility rests with the manager. Over five years buying and selling and look what we have, a very average team. If we want to keep the 3 or 4 decent playes we have, something has to happen and soon. Bring in a new manager now, give him the rest of the season to get to know the current squad and thier individual ablilities. He then has the summer transfer window to get things sorted. What about Alex McLeish or Mark Hughes!

Shaun Ashley (Liverpool fan) says...

We've been promised money in the summer, is Rafa the man to spend it? Something needs to change, the club is a shodow of the one I've followed for 30 years. Ideal world, new owners, new stadium, Villa, Silva and a decent srtiker, imagine that?
