Beckham: Heading to Finland
David Beckham has thanked well-wishers for their messages of support and is targeting a 'swift recovery'.
The 34-year-old is currently on his way to Finland to undergo surgery on his injured Achilles, having picked up the knock while on duty for AC Milan on Sunday.
Initial reports suggest the former England captain is destined to sit out this summer's World Cup as a result of the problem.
It is believed that Beckham will require between three and five months to recover from his operation, which would end any hopes he had of heading to South Africa.
He is due under the knife on Monday afternoon and will have a better understanding as to how long he will be sidelined for once his surgery is completed.
For now, Beckham is attempting to put a brave face on the untimely injury and is focusing on returning to full fitness as quickly as possible.
"I am on my way to Finland to see a specialist and have a scan on the injury," Beckham wrote on his official website.
"I am upset but want to thank everyone for their messages of support.
"I hope to make a swift and full recovery."

Good Luck Becks! Really, really wish you a VERY SPEEDY RECOVERY! Hope to see in S.A. this summer NO MATTER WHAT..as I know that you can give a lot of MORAL BOOST to the team and of course the young players to do well in the tournament, even IF you didn't play! So please Becks..get rest and get well SOON! If you couldn't make it in the World Cup this time..there is still MLS Cup and Euro 2012 to win! GOOD LUCK!

So sad David. Absolute Icon and role model of a family man. I`m sure Fabio will have him alongside in J`Burg. Will not forget that gesture when he went to Real and that boy climbed over the fence and just before the hunk guard was about to grab the lad David picked him up in his arms. They`ve never stopped loving him ever since at Real. Not to mention the Commonwealth Games Ceremony!
