Adam Johnson was delighted to score his first goal for Manchester City but would have preferred it to have come against different opposition.

The former Middlesbrough winger was a boyhood Black Cats fan and is disappointed his goal denied his local side the three-point haul.

However, Johnson is paid to do a job and is more thankful he is now off the mark for his new club rather than worrying about its impact on Sunderland.

Thankful

"If there was one place I probably wouldn't have wanted to score my first goal, it would probably have been here," explained Johnson.

"But I am just thankful I have finally got off the mark because I am a Manchester City player now.

"But that's how it goes, isn't it? That's football."

Black Cats keeper Craig Gordon made a string of saves in the second half, including a fine block on Craig Bellamy's deflected effort.

Special

Johnson knew it would take something special to beat the Scotland international and he was just thankful it came via his left boot.

"I said that to him after the game coming off, it was going to take something special to beat him," he continued.

"Especially in the second half, he kept some great efforts from us out.

"We probably dominated the second half, we them pegged back in and we created a number of clear-cut chances. We probably could have nicked it if it wasn't for Craig."
