Michael Carrick has added his voice to those piling praise on a rejuvenated Dimitar Berbatov.

The Bulgarian, it is fair to say, has failed to hit the heights at Manchester United following a club record £30.75million move from Tottenham.

Often maligned for his apparent lack of enthusiasm, he soon alienated a large section of the substantial United following.

He has, however, knuckled down and responded to those critics in style with a number of buccaneering performances of late.

Berbatov was one of the few United players to emerge from a scrappy 1-0 win over Wolves with any credit, while he was at the centre of all that was good in the 3-0 demolition of Fulham on Sunday.

At last he finally appears to be fulfilling the potential which caught Sir Alex Ferguson's eye, and Carrick believes the supremely-talented 29-year-old will play a major role for United over the coming months as they close in on domestic and European glory.

Terrific

"Berba was terrific against Fulham," the England international said in the Manchester Evening News.

"He has been excellent for a number of weeks now.

"At Wolves it was a big performance from him as he was up front on his own.

"And on Sunday he really deserved his goal after all his work and endeavour. He did terrifically for Wayne's second goal and his overall play was very good.

"He is hitting top form at the right time."
