Portsmouth: Points deduction
Portsmouth have been deducted nine points for going into administration, the Premier League has confirmed.
Pompey entered administration in February following terrible financial problems, after they could not find a buyer to take on the club's crippling debts.
The deduction comes after the High Court declared the South Coast club's administration valid and winding-up order suspended, after HM Revenue and Customs dropped their challenge.
Administrator Andrew Andronikou attended a meeting with the Premier League on Wednesday when the penalty against the Fratton Park outfit was confirmed.
Pompey's total points tally for the season is now reduced from 19 to ten, all but condemning them to relegation to the Championship.
It leaves Avram Grant's side 17 points adrift of safety with only nine league games remaining until the end of the campaign.
A statement from the Premier League said: "Following the High Court's decision that Portsmouth FC's administration is valid the Premier League board convened today to apply the League's rules and policies in relation to a member club suffering an event of insolvency.
"As a result Portsmouth FC has been deducted nine points with immediate effect.
"As part of this process the board met with the administrator to agree how we will work together for the remainder of the season to ensure that the club is able fulfil its commitments."

I have never understood this rule of deducting points from team because they have gone into admin........ Now poor Pompey will relegate & getting back is never a joke. Hard luck you Pompey fans but i wish you luck.

This one beats the heck out of me. Why punish the players and fans for what the now 'ex-owners' did? Why notlet them have a fighting chnce of saving themselves ON the field? If it's as deterrent value, did the Leeds deal help prevent the same mistakes?? Clearly not!! The only difference between Portsmouth, Liverpool and Man. United is the way the financial situation has been marketed and packaged. Au Revoir for a decade Portsmouth. You will be missed.

Yet another club whose fans have to suffer for the sins of the incompetent boneheads that bled the club dry. What a disgrace. I know that rules are rules but there has to be better ways of meting out the penalties. For instance, punish only the people that cause the issue. Why should innocent fans have to pay the price while the fools that cause these kinds of messes get off scott free?

As a Pompey lad born and bred i was saddened to see what has happened to our team. At least now we can go into the Championship with a clean slate and hopefully gain promotion back to the Premier League. The disgusting managing of the club by the Owners and board can now be laid to rest. I only hope that the process of allowing the new Owners is tightened up, so as to make sure that we are not duped again.

i am all for fairness but with many other teams point deductions for money troubles is more proof that football is now run for money and not for the fans! The FA should punish the idiots that ruin the clubs not the hard working fans that spend their own hard earned money! We (Portsmouth) now need to make sure we leave administration or face a further 10 point deduction in the Championship! Also hard to understand why only 2 players agreed to wage cuts when over 80 people earning small salaries have lost there jobs.

What a waste of time, that is like no punishment at all! They are already relegated in all but name because they would never be able to win enough games between now and seasons end to stay up anyway. Do you think that is any incentive for other clubs not to live beyond their means?? I think that the best solution to the problem of clubs just sticking their noses up at the authorities and blindly overspending beyond ther means is AUTOMATIC relegation!! It may sound harsh, but, it will certainly make clubs take notice. Even as far as stopping 'parachute' payments as well. Football has for too long been 'above the law' and needs brining down to earth with a crash. I have nothing against Pompey, but am against these spend at all cost to win clubs and players in fantasy land wages attitudes Mac....Everton supporter ( 5th in the league for the last 2 years and top six and Champs League in last 5, with almost NO money)
