Johnson: Bowing out

Gary Johnson.
Quotes of the week
Bristol City have confirmed Gary Johnson has left the club by mutual consent.
As revealed by skysports.com on Wednesday, City have decided to part company with Johnson after a poor run of form.
City have won only two of their last 12 league games and have slipped out of contention for a place in the Championship play-offs.
Johnson took over at Ashton Gate in 2005, winning them promotion to the Championship and he was one game away from taking them to the Premier League only to lose the play-off final to Hull City in 2008.
Robins chairman Steve Lansdown paid tribute to Johnson, but admitted results have not been up to expectations this season.
"I would like to place on record my thanks to Gary for the fantastic work he has done over four-and-a-half years at the club," Lansdown told the club's official website.
"Winning promotion from League One and reaching the Championship play-off final will always live long in the memory for myself and I'm sure for our supporters as well.
"Results haven't gone as well as everyone would have liked this season and it's been mutually agreed that now is the right time to make a change."
Johnson conceded he felt the time was right to leave Ashton Gate in search of a new challenge.
"I'd like to thank the chairman for his continual support throughout the last four-and-a-half years and congratulate him on taking the club to the level it currently enjoys.
"I thank the majority of the club's fans for their tremendous support during my time with the club.
"I thank the players and staff for their continued efforts in getting this club from what was a position at the bottom of League One when I joined, to promotion to the Championship, to the play-off final for a place in the Premier League and then to compete in the Championship thereafter.
"I leave Bristol City FC with fond memories but feel the time is right to move on to a new challenge."
Johnson's assistant Keith Millen will take charge of Saturday's visit of Newcastle, live on Sky Sports 1 & HD1.

Sad to see Sir Gary go but i think it was time. Thank you for everything you have done for us getting us into the 2nd tier of the best league in the world. As of getting a new boss i think we should try and get holloway i know some city fans wont be happy with this but he would be the best man for the job. Gary Johnson you are a living legend in my eyes and always will be.

Johnson has done a great job in the last 4 and a half years, he shouldn't be remembered for the form over the course of the season. I Met him a couple of years ago in a pub in Devon whilst on Holiday - he sat with us for a good hour talking about football and City. He loved the club and it's fans, was very passionate and wanted to do well. I Will be sad to see him go and will have to get the name changed on my shirt now especially as i put a 'G' at that start of it. Hoping we get Southgate in to take charge.

As a City fan i would like to Thank Gary for all his effort, But I agree I think it was time for him to go, I would now like to see a big name manager to come to the club now, like Alan Shearer or the like, some one who would command the respect from the players striaght away and someone the players would play their hearts out for.

gary johnson took us to where we are and nearly to prem which would of been to early. he had to go though as the football this season has been dire and his determination to keep playing his son and not giving others a chance has led to his downfall and splits in the camp. i wish him well and thank him for getting us this far . please bring in steve coppell not a 36 club man like megson and the others!!

I'm sure the Rovers will be delighted to welcome City to League 1 next season, now that they have ditched Gary Johnson. I'm disgusted that the board at Ashton Gate are as short sighted and fickle as some of the club's fans. Shame on you! All the best to an excellent manager, Gary Johnson, in whatever he decides to do next. If more attention had been paid to the requirements of the team, rather than the new stadium, results may well have been different. We'll be lucky to fill the new (or even current) stadium with the crowds a League 1 team is liable to attract.
