Star striker Carlos Tevez has assured Manchester City fans he is in it for the long haul.

The Argentina international quickly became a fans' favourite following his cross-city switch from United last summer, signing a five-year contract with City.

The 26-year-old has repaid the Blues with a career-best 21 goals so far this season, despite missing the first month through injury, which have maintained City's challenge for a top-four finish.

Tevez is a key figure in the club's bid to establish themselves as Premier League title contenders and UEFA Champions League regulars.

Retirement

The former Boca Juniors frontman was quoted towards the end of last year as saying that he would consider retiring if he managed to help Argentina to win a third World Cup this summer.

But he told a fans' forum at Eastlands on Thursday evening that he is fully committed to the Blues' ambitious plans.

"I'm here for the long term," he said. "Of course, if we do win the World Cup with Argentina that would be fabulous.

"But when I came here last summer I was offered the big project, and I am planning to be here for the long term."
