Roma came out on top in the heavyweight contest against Inter Milan to move within one point of the leaders, while a Fabrizio Miccoli hat-trick fired Palermo past Bologna.

Roma's five Serie A defeats this season all came before the end of October and their form over the past five months has been irresistible.

Inter Milan, by contrast, have started to drop points in recent weeks to allow Roma and AC Milan back into the title race.

And Jose Mourinho's side were unable to find the performance they needed at the Stadio Olimpico as they went down 2-1.

Roma displayed their confidence early on and took the lead on 16 minutes when Daniele De Rossi capitalised on a blunder by visiting goalkeeper Julio Cesar to score.

Diego Milito equalised for Inter in the 66th minute but they were on level terms for just six minutes before Roma restored their lead.

Luca Toni, on loan from Bayern Munich, controlled a mis-hit Rodrigo Taddei shot and fired home in the 73rd minute to seal Roma's triumph.

Inter will feel they should have earned at least a draw after hitting the woodwork three times, with the last attempt coming from Milito deep in stoppage time.

Palermo strengthened their hold on fourth place by beating Bologna 3-1 in the day's late game.

It took just ten minutes for Miccoli to break the deadlock, although Adailton brought Bologna level in the 38th minute.

Miccoli restored Palermo's lead from the penalty spot two minutes before half-time and then completed his treble late on as Palermo pulled four points clear of fifth-placed Sampdoria.
