Manchester City have secured their first signing of the summer with the capture of Germany international Jerome Boateng from Hamburg.

The versatile defender, who is in Joachim Low's squad for the World Cup, had reportedly attracted interest from a number of top clubs after some impressive performances in recent seasons.

Roberto Mancini has been tracking his progress for some time and negotiations began over a possible move to Eastlands last month.

Boateng, 21, has now agreed terms on a five-year contract with City and will officially join at the start of July.

Mancini is delighted to have landed the 6ft 3in stopper, who can operate both at centre-back and full-back, and is tipping him for a bright future.

"This is a very good signing for Manchester City and I am pleased to bring Jerome to the club," Mancini told the club's official website.

"He is a young player who is already of a very high quality, but I think he can continue to improve at City.

"It's good for Jerome to have agreed terms ahead of the World Cup, so he can now concentrate on playing for Germany.

"And I will be very interested to see how he gets on in the tournament, before welcoming him back to meet his team-mates in pre-season."

Michael Batchelor (Chelsea fan) says...

Good signing, good young player, just see what he brings to the Premier League.
