West Bromwich Albion have abandoned their interest in former Manchester United midfielder Eric Djemba-Djemba.

The Cameroon international, who currently plies his trade with Danish outfit BK Odense, travelled to England for talks earlier this week.

However, the Baggies have decided not to pursue the matter further on medical grounds.

A statement released by the club on their official website read: "West Brom have decided not to pursue their interest in Odense midfielder Eric Djemba-Djemba.

"He travelled to England to meet the club earlier this week.

"But, following medical tests and further talks between the clubs, Albion have decided not to proceed with a deal."

Concern

It is unclear what the precise problem is that put West Brom off, but they feel they would be taking an undue risk in bringing him on board.

Djemba-Djemba had been hoping for a second chance in English football, having previously turned out for United, Aston Villa and Burnley between 2003 and 2007.

Meanwhile, Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo has confirmed that he remains in the market for attacking talent, with Roman Bednar, Luke Moore and Simon Cox all struggling for fitness ahead of the new season.

He said: "It is a big concern to us at the moment. We are working on things but it's difficult. Everyone is after a striker.

"I've been saying since the end of last season that we need more players."
