Tottenham's pre-season campaign suffered a blow as they were comprehensively beaten 4-1 at home by Villarreal.

The Spanish side only finished seventh in La Liga last term but overcame Spurs, who will be playing UEFA Champions League football next year should they qualify, with ease at White Hart Lane.

Former Manchester United striker Giuseppe Rossi put the Spaniards in front and the Italy international doubled the lead before half-time.

After the break Giovani Dos Santos pulled one back for Tottenham but Harry Redknapp's men were soon cut open once more.

Rossi grabbed his third after an effort deflected in off Vedran Corluka and Marco Ruben then netted a fourth from close-range to seal the win.

Elsewhere, a hugely inexperienced Chelsea XI went down 5-1 at Wycombe.

Jon-Paul Pittman was the star of the night at Adams Park as he scored a

four-minute hat-trick.

Chelsea, whose seniors are about to depart on a trip to Germany, fielded a side in which Franco Di Santo and Scott Sinclair were the only familiar faces.

Meanwhile, Hearts came from behind to earn a 2-1 win at Gillingham.

The League Two side took the lead when Luke Rooney scored a penalty before new signing Adebayo Akinfenwa came off the bench to make his debut.

The lead didn't last long however and goals from Arvydas Novikovas and Ismael Bouzid gave the SPL side a narrow win at Priestfield.
