Sky Sports News understands that Celtic have dropped their interest in England international goalkeeper David James.

The 39-year-old is looking for a new club after leaving Portsmouth following the club's relegation from the Premier League.

Pompey were keen for James to remain at Fratton Park, but they eventually withdrew their contract offer after losing patience.

James was due to hold talks with Celtic this week after manager Neil Lennon confirmed the club's interest in him replacing Artur Boruc.

However, after learning that James is against uprooting his family from the South of England they have decided against pursuing a deal.

Lennon may now step up his efforts to sign German keeper Timo Hildebrand after he revealed the club are interested in him.

Skysports.comrevealed on Thursday that Bristol City have emerged as the shock leaders in the race for James' signature.
