Mathieu Flamini has played down reports he could return to the Premier League after telling former Arsenal team-mate Cesc Fabregas to 'do what he really wants'.

French midfielder Flamini left Arsenal for AC Milan two years ago, but has struggled to secure regular first-team football in Italy.

He has been linked with both Aston Villa and Newcastle United this summer, but is unaware of the speculation concerning his future.

"I didn't see that because I'm in Italy, but they are two good clubs," he said.

He added: "Personally, I hope I'm going to play more than what I did in the last year. I hope this year will be better."

Flamini did, however, refuse to rule out a return to the Premier League one day, saying: "I'm happy to be in Italy, it's a great championship and I'm having a lot of fun. But in football, you never know."

The 26-year-old will face Arsenal in the Emirates Cup on Saturday and his old club are battling to fend off Barcelona's overtures for Fabregas.

Arsene Wenger expects Fabregas to still be his captain this season and Flamini believes the Spaniard must decide what is best for his future.

"I would tell him to do what he feels, because it's a very personal choice and I cannot advise anything," said Flamini.

"He will have to do what he really wants. If he stays or goes, I will support him because he is a friend."
