Van der Vaart: Deal complete
Tottenham have confirmed that an agreement is in place to bring Holland international Rafael van der Vaart from Real Madrid to White Hart Lane.
Spurs only emerged as contenders to sign the midfielder a few hours before Tuesday's transfer deadline and it was initially unclear whether they had been able to conclude a deal in time.
It was understood that Tottenham had missed the cut-off point to finalise the paperwork and requested special dispensation from the Premier League to sign Van der Vaart.
A statement has now been released on the club's official website to clear up the confusion and announce that the move has been approved.
And the Premier League said in a statement: "The Premier League can confirm the transfer of Rafael van der Vaart's registration from Real Madrid to Tottenham Hotspur."
Van der Vaart, who has scored 16 goals in 83 appearances for Holland, is thought to have joined for a fee of around £8million.
Madrid earlier denied Harry Redknapp's assertion that the player was subject of an £18million bid from Bayern Munich, whilst confirming they had met the deadline for Van der Vaart's sale.
Sporting director Miguel Pardeza told his club's official website: "Real Madrid met all the deadlines regarding the transfer of Van der Vaart.
"It's now up to the Premier League to accept the signing so that we can make it official.
"It is absolutely false that Real Madrid received a 21million euro offer from Bayern Munich for Van der Vaart.
"In fact, the German team never showed an interest to sign the player, so the allegations made in England have greatly surprised us."

He is a great player and it''s good to see him in the Premier League but I don''t understand why Spurs get "special dispensation" to sign him if they didn''t beat the deadline. Surely that renders the transfer window pointless?!

I really adore Van der Vaart, he''s a quality midfield player. I just don''t understand why Sir Alex didn''t buy him for a price of £8million. Scholes is not getting any younger, Ando won''t be as creative as Van der Vaart. I wonder next year if UTD looking for him at around £18million stupid Alex...Nice negotiation spurs

Great signing by Spurs and for only 8 million! This just goes to show that there is a different price for the likes of Spurs and almost 3 times for Man Utd! Fergie should''ve snapped him up a few weeks ago as he is the type of player we needed (i.e. a playmaker). Good luck, Rafael.

Epic signing, but why do the rules of the transfer deadline not apply to Harry Redknapp?

Great signing! well done Harry on getting a quality goalscoring midfielder for such little money, although were left with the high quality problem of who we play in midfield ... Modric Huddlestone Van der Vaart Lennon and moving bale who''s been a revolution at left wing, back to left back seems like a good option however what about sandro is he to good to leave out..5 man midfield maybe?will modric loose influence on the game outwide and will bale loose his attacking flair at left back? ...headache for harry

Great one Harry!! I know some people say it''s one midfielder too many with Modric, but don''t forget with all the comps Spurs are in some squad rotation will be needed. Great buy.... Come on you Spurs!!!

Danny and ''arry have done it again!!!. Last time it was Kranjcar for peanuts and now VDV for close to the same. 8 million for a player of his quality and experience is unbelievable. I also heard a few months ago that vdv said he would only leave for man utd, oh well alex you missed that one. When scholes retires man utd will not be able to tempt spurs players away any more, they couldn''t with bale or modric this time so why will that change when the squad is even better?. Spurs will win something this season mark my words. COYS!!!!!!!!!!

Great coup for ''Arry! But to go from buying nobody, then at 4pm pulling off the transfer of the window - smells of the ''Arry dealings from Portsmouth! Who wouldn''t want him for £8m?? PS - the youtube clip of ''Arry with the reporter being asked about wheeler dealer - classic!

First class signing ''Arry my man! Signing Van Der Vaart proves that we are now starting to compete with Man Utd/Chelsea/Arsenal. We still are not the full ticket yet, but watch this space. As for him choosing Spurs says it all....we''re on our way! C''mon you Spurs! Woo Hoo! and DOH to the rest!

Not convinced that this is as good a signing as seemingly everyone is making out! Struggled with Real Madrid last term (dare I say robinho-esque) and with Holland (particularly in the world cup). Granted if he can get back to his Hamburg days then he would be a quality signing but having not played in the premiership before and with recent form, it is certainly a gamble more than anything else.

gerrard at liverpool, lampard at chelsea, fabregas at arsenal, scholes at manchester utd. all teams need a quality midfield meastro if they want to succed and now we see vdv at white hart lane, well done arry quality signing and for a bargain price ( 24 mil for milner or 8 mil for vdv i know who i would rather sign ) heres to a top 4 finish and qualifying for the knockout stages of the champs league

Adam Alcabes (Arsenal fan) says... Rafael is on the wrong side of North London. He''''d have fit in rather well at Arsenal''''s 4-4-3 formation. At Spurs, he''''ll be competing for time with Modric. Good luck though, class player. So thats why Arsenal seem to have more space to pass the ball, they play with 12 men on the pitch. Agreed he is class and would have loved to seen him at Anfield.

This is a brilliant deal by harry. They get one of the best midfielders in the world for a third of the 24 million paid by Manchester city for milner. I know which one i wouldnt rather have. I still think they will finish short of the top 4 but great buy.
