Fiorentina claim they are close to agreeing a deal which will see Riccardo Montolivo pen a new contract.

The midfielder had been strongly linked with a move away from the Serie A giants during the summer transfer window, with Arsenal among those believed to be keen.

However, with no switch having materialised, he is now locked in talks regarding a possible extension to his stay with the Viola.

Fiorentina sporting director Pantaleo Corvino is confident the Italy international will put pen to paper and expects an announcement to be made soon.

"The renewal of Montolivo?" he said.

"Before the World Cup we almost had an agreement, we were about 100,000 euros out. I think we can agree and I believe he will sign up for another five years."

No deal

Corvino has also spoken about those players Fiorentina failed to land over the summer.

An agreement could not be struck with Liverpool's Emiliano Insua, while Ezequiel Munoz also failed to arrive in Florence.

Corvino added: "The non-arrival of Insua? We were interested on a technical level and the deal would have been advantageous, but we could not give him what he wanted.

"Munoz? We had the option to buy him in 2009 but then he got injured and I didn't feel it was worth investing €9million in him."
