Fabio Capello insists England must win against Bulgaria in their opening qualifier for Euro 2012.

The Three Lions begin their European campaign at Wembley on Friday night, hoping for a victory in their first competitive fixture since this summer's World Cup debacle.

England crashed out in the first knockout round in South Africa, putting in an abject display to lose 4-1 to rivals Germany.

The Italian coach came under heavy criticism after the tournament, with certain quarters even calling for his departure after just one shot at a major competition.

However, the Football Association stuck by their guns and now Capello admits that he must get morale up once more, and is still enthusiastic about the task in hand.

"The players have trained very well," Capello said.

"They were compact with a good spirit. We have to play well and we have to win.

"I am always enthusiastic about my job. When you win you are the best. When you lose, you are the worst. You have to live with both moments."

England will be without Chelsea stars Frank Lampard and John Terry on Friday, as both players are suffering from injuries.

Capello will play James Milner in the centre of midfield instead of Lampard, while Everton's Phil Jagielka will come in for former captain Terry.

The former AC Milan, Real Madrid and Juventus coach insists the Blues duo had to miss the Bulgaria clash, and says the best course of action has been taken.

No choice

"We know Frank Lampard needs an operation to be ready for his club and the next game with us," he added.

"John Terry has been playing with an injection because all the other Chelsea defenders were injured.

"He told us he had to stay at home because he cannot play all the games.

"At half-time in the game against Hungary he said he couldn't carry on.

"He was with us then. Now he needs to relax in order to be fit for the next games."

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Scott Carson has withdrawn from the squad because of a family bereavement, but Capello revealed Joe Hart was always going to start between the sticks.

"Joe is my number one goalkeeper," he remarked.

"He is good. He has improved a lot. He played last season with Birmingham but was too young for South Africa.

"Now we have changed some things and he is doing very well."

Mark Abbott (Liverpool fan) says...

Another England game and fans wonder which England will turn up. I''m glad Terry and Lampard are out as we play better without them. Hope Fabio plays Walcott and Johnson as he should have done in the world cup. Also he should have played Hart in goal what rubbish that he was too young. Shame Zamora and Movable Richards weren''t available. Get rid of Barry too and the rest of the old guard. We want to see Ashley young, johnson and Walcott have their moment.. come on England..
