Potters boss lays out expectations for deadline-day arrivals

Stoke City manager Tony Pulis has warned his deadline-day signings they will have to earn their place in his starting XI.

Former Barcelona and Chelsea forward Eidur Gudjohnsen was the Potters' marquee purchase as the Midlanders proved to be one of the busier Premier League clubs on Tuesday.

Portsmouth utility player Marc Wilson also arrived, as well as ex-Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant on loan from Real Zaragoza, while midfielder Salif Diao re-signed for the club.

Gudjohnsen and Diao have already been told by Pulis that they will undergo a 'mini pre-season' during the international break to ready them for the 13th September clash against Aston Villa.

And he has warned all the newcomers they cannot afford to rest on their laurels at the Britannia Stadium.

"If they work as hard as the rest of the players do, with that little bit of extra quality they have, you hope it will make us a better team," said Pulis.

"Over the next 12 days Eidur will do a mini pre-season with Salif and hopefully be ready for Aston Villa.

"He is a fantastic player and will add that bit of extra quality we want."

Good business

Pulis feels he got a good deal in signing Wilson, despite losing Liam Lawrence and Dave Kitson to Pompey as part of the move.

"We paid £1.5million for him, plus the two other players going that way, so we think that is good business.

"He has good qualities, has had Premier League experience and is one we hope will come in and grow with this club."

The Stoke boss said he had been tracking Pennant since the beginning of the summer but was only able to make something happen late on.

"We spoke right at the start of pre-season to find out what the situation was but it was too difficult a deal to do then," he added on Stoke Player.

"As we got closer to the deadline the deal became more viable to us as a football club."
