Capello: Can handle the pressure
Fabio Capello insists he has experienced worse situations during his coaching career after suggesting he has been turned into a 'monster'.
Former AC Milan and Real Madrid boss Capello is under pressure as England coach following the team's woeful showing at the World Cup finals.
Capello has borne the brunt of the criticism for the disappointment in South Africa, which came on the back of an impressive qualification campaign.
The Italian is now facing a further examination of his credentials as England start the road to Euro 2012 with a double-header against Bulgaria and Switzerland.
A defeat in either game could renew calls for Capello to quit his position, but the 64-year-old is not troubled by the pressure of the job.
"No, this is not the worst situation I have been in. It has been the same two or three times. Once at Madrid, once at Milan, and now," he said, ahead of Friday's game against Bulgaria at Wembley.
"I hope the pressure brings out the best in me. Up to this point it usually has."
However, Capello has survived enough difficult periods not to get too worked up by this one, especially as he considers most of the pressure to be media generated.
"You create the God, and you create the monster, no?" said Capello, staring straight back at the inquisitors he believes are responsible for the construction and dismantling of reputations.
"I remember what you wrote about me a short time before this period.
"I live the same moment when you write well of me as when you write badly of me. You have to live with the pressure. It is my job.
"This is my team. We lost one game in the World Cup after one big mistake from the referee.
"You don't remember this. But after this, your opinion about me changed completely.
"You wrote a lot of things differently. But I live with this situation."

i agree with David Brent the reading fan the press is the problem, dont build up the teams confidence and slate them as soon as they have a bad game, support them instead, also look at the premier league how many teams in the league compared to most around europe, and even then they get a break, our players have premiership, champs league, carling cup, fa cup ect without qualifyers and world cups, maybe we shouldnt play in carling cup and let lower leagues only as the money would help the smaller leagues and our players not over played JUST A THOUGHT. or these friendlys 1 3 days befor premier league starts and then 3 weeks in, i thing the players need a winter break

I''m not saying Capello isn''t a good manager, and I''m not saying that he''s fully to blame for what happened at the World Cup. The England set-up has problems, from top to bottom. The problem with Capello is that he isn''t part of the solution, in my eyes. Sure, the players under-performed, but even I could tell you before the World Cup that Joe Hart should have been the #1 goalkeeper (not a 40 year-old relegated David James, or a 17th placed Robert Green), that Emile Heskey is long past his prime (3 goals for Villa last season, and struggling to make the team), and that Steven Gerrard isn''t a left-winger. I''m not saying he''s a bad football manager, but I think he just doesn''t cut it for this particular job. Too rigid in his ways - this new "younger" squad should have been in the works prior to the World Cup. (And I''m not talking in hindsight, because everybody knew that we''d have the problems that we had. Rio Ferdinand played 13 games last year, Terry had a shocking season by his standards, and our back-up for them was a 32 year old coming out of retirement, and a 31 year old who also nearly got relegated.)

It was patently obvious that the England squad were totally drained after a gruelling Premiership season followed by two meaningless friendlies against Mexico and Japan not to mention the game against local opposition in Austria. FC should have taken a line from Argentina and reeled his players in months before SA. Must learn from this.

Capello is really a wise man! He speaks the truth. The English press unfairly expects miracles from this great coach. Please, give Capello another chance. He will surely make England rise from the ashes, Phoenix-like. If only you let him get on with it with all tranquillity! Dr. Mark Said from Malta.
